OLYMPIC GAMES in Tvind, Denmark

We met in Tvind to organise the Olympic games with 50 different disciplines for 650 kids! Hana from May team reports

Finally the day came for us which to go to Denmark. All my team mates were quite excited to go to Denmark, as if they were children! There was no exceptions - even me, that is because it is my first time to be in Europe and I am going to another country.

Our flight was supposed to depart at 7:20am next morning, so we had to go the day before.  We started going to the airport in London at around 9pm by mini bus and two rental cars as a group.  Afterwards we met at the airport to stay the night together and we took an airplane.  We arrived at Billund airport in Denmark. We got Denmark on Sunday, it was completely calm and quiet, there were few people on the streets and even a big supermarket was closed.

We were spread all around the Tvind schools in Denmark for a week.  We met together again a week later in Tvind to organise the Olympic games with 50 different disciplines for 650 kids from care homes and special schools, who have some problems and other reasons to live away from their parents and home.

Denmark was quite clean. The people in Denmark were kind and tall, even a toilet was too high for me. The first week Denmark was like a holiday, we had no expectations what was going to happen for the next week of the Olympic Games.

I felt sympathy for the other DI-s because we were all from different countries, with different backgrounds, and different characters, different cultures; we all have different languages and so on. We have only one purpose and that is to go to Africa or India to help them. We all have the same goal even though we are all different from each other. It was definitely quite a good experience to meet all the DI’s from Denmark and Norway and it was a pretty touching moment for me.

The preparation of the Olympic Games was bigger than I expected, it needed a lot more people than I thought. We were all busy preparing but it rained a lot and there was a storm with a strong wind. I was completely wet and frozen. In my opinion, the head office should have prepared an alternative way to enjoy the sports competition just in case.  I think I can put up with any kind of situation in the future.

Before going to Tvind, we had already seen the kids in one of the other schools so we were used to them.

My discipline was teambuilding where each team works together as a team; we should make creative games for the teams to help them work in unity. Personally I am not good at creating something; therefore it was not so easy for me however I did my best at it. I have learnt from this activity that communication is the most important thing when we work together, when we come from different countries. We did not have any big problems while we were working together, but if I opened my mind more, it was going to be better for me. I need to break the shyness when I meet someone who is new or I do not know. It was hard to be creative but it was fun at the same time.

Also I feel that we are closer to each other in our team than before, I hope that everybody feels the same as me. We worked hard and we were very busy and we tried to understand each other.

I would like to say thank you for co-operation of everyone in our team.  It was a nice journey because of you guys, and a great experience.
