Fighting with The Poor, 18 months / A-certificate

The 18 months "Fighting with The Poor" programme starts every year in May and November.

It goes like this:

  • 6 months international studies for the A-certificate and preparation for the project period;
  • 6 months work in your Development Instructor Trio at a Humana People to People project in Africa or India;
  • 6 months studies, exams for the A-certificate, journalism and presentations for the public.


Period 1:
The Present & The Future
Duration: 6 months. Base at the school with investigations in the national field.

Studying how the world has been divided in rich and poor countries

2. Why are the rich countries in the North and the poor countries in the South – studying imperialism and colonialism.
3. Making investigations on international relations in official offices located in the North - like UN offices, world bank, IMF, companies investing and exploiting resources in third world countries
4. Understanding the world economy and why third world countries are in debt to international banks.
5. Understanding Globalisation and how it affects the international relations between North and South.
6. Forming TRIOs to work together at the project in Africa or India.
7. Choosing the project to work at in period 3 in Africa or India – be it Child Aid, Farmers Club, TCE, Fundraising, DNS, OWU or starting up something new.
8. Studying the country you are going to work in.
9. Building up the collective foundation by running the school and the team together.
10. Training practical skills to be used in period 4 working at the project as a TRIO.
11. Studying the curriculum for Fighting with The Poor A-certificate: The Poor – general facts on the whole world: populations hit by being poor, history of poor people, global phenomena hitting poor people.
12. Studying global phenomena hitting especially The Poor like Global Warming with the consequences of floods, droughts and the issue of food production.
13. Running the school together with all aspects such as physical work, cooking, cleaning, maintenance, sports, Garden Farming and healthy food.
14. Building up stamina, physical strength and courage for being an appropriate fighter with The Poor.

Period 2:
Fighting with The Poor
Duration: 6 months. Base on project in Africa or India

Ready for taking up the challenges at the project with plans and materials brought from the preparation period.

2. Getting to know the people at the project, the vision and idea of the project and the many concrete tasks to be carried through.
3. Planning how to carry out the actions prepared in the preparation period: building preschools, starting Garden Farming, doing literacy campaigns, carrying out prevention actions against malaria, teaching about big issues of our time at DNS, teaching English at OWU, starting up income generating activities and much more.
4. Presenting the hypothesis formulated in the preparation period to the project leadership and planning and organizing how to carry the necessary actions through to prove the hypothesis in accordance with the project leadership.
5. Studying and carrying out practical field actions as part of the curriculum for B-certificate in Fighting with The Poor.
6. Researching the area by investigations, interviews and cooperation with local authorities.
7. Developing the project with its productions, its routines and its actions, more members, better implementation.

Acquiring skills in information work: making interviews, taking notes and pictures, writing summaries and reports, working with video production.

9. Living together with the people at the project, being a good example of living a humble life while doing improvements with small means for the betterment of the daily life.
10. Training in mobilising people for community actions.
11. Working with the hypothesis and showing at a People’s Exam elements from the hypothesis when confirmed or rejected.
12. Working in the TRIO to make all possible improvements at the project.
13. Holding one Open Sunday each month, preparing the topics, the entertainment, the organisation and mobilisation of the people.



Period 3:
The Journal
Duration: 6 months. Base at CICD and Europe.


1. Returning to the school with heads and hands full of new knowledge and energy for bringing it to the Public Arena.
2. Gathering the documentation and deciding on products to be able to bring true journalism to the Public.
3. Producing articles, pamphlets, videos, audio tapes, power point presentations, picture exhibitions, songs, street theater, speeches for debate forums, books and more.
4. Practicing and training reporting and documentation skills on a new level.
5. Bringing it to the Public: Every 14 days bringing reporting from the studies and actions carried through at the projects, including the big issues from Fighting with The Poor: general education, health issues, alphabetization, food security and production, income generation and more.
6. Studying further the curriculum for A-certificate in Fighting with The Poor, making all tasks into comprehensive and new knowledge reports for the Showroom at the OWU Website, bringing the truth to the public.
7. Studying at a new level globalisation and the international relations between North and South, the rich and the poor.
8. Concluding on the studies and producing new knowledge based on own investigations, experiences and studies.
9. Passing the final exams for A-certificate in Fighting with The Poor.
10. Going on tour in Europe to spread the new knowledge in a thousand ways: speeches in the street, newspaper articles, lectures at universities and colleges, theater in the street and other public performances, radio broadcasting, TV reports, exhibitions, films and pictures on Internet and more.
11. Sticking together as a team, deliberations of own future and a possible common future for some.

Concluding on the 18 month program, using the last time together to throw up future perspectives for The Poor and the big issues of our time.

13. Arranging a big Open Sunday, People’s Exam or other open event with more than 500 guests.
14. Preparing to leave the school for extraordinarily useful jobs.
15. Understanding and taking a stand to the concept of Open Future.
